A Proverbs 31 woman stands tall in her relationship with God. Her husband, children, and everyone else she deals with are great beneficiaries of her goodwill. Her husband does not worry when he’s away. He’s confident he has an intelligent wife back home. She can make correct decisions in his absence.
You're probably here because you’d like to be a copy-paste of the Proverbs 31 woman. We’re going to look at both the facts and the misconceptions of this greatly mentioned scripture.
Let’s deal with the misconceptions of a Proverbs 31 woman before we proceed. Proverbs 31: 10-31 has highlighted several qualities of a Proverbs 31 woman. I’ve merged them into one title – an independent woman.
I’ve never understood why people get goose pimples when anyone talks about a woman’s independence!
We tend to associate independence with divorce or single motherhood. The Proverbs 31 woman demystifies the misconception. It’s proof that a wife can be independent within her marriage.
But first, let’s see where the controversy comes from.
The Bible tells us, a husband will rule over his wife. We mostly dwell on the ruling to the extent that we forget the reciprocal relationship God expects in marriage!
Many of us have misconstrued the ruling to mean a wife is a lesser being.
But how exactly do we need to look at a wife?
A marriage is an entity that has two equal players with defined responsibilities. Often, we feel like jumping out of our skin when anyone talks about equality in marriage.
The Proverbs 31 woman and her husband both understand the value of each other. The husband praises his wife because theirs is a working marriage! A Proverbs 31 woman is born of a supportive husband.
The Ideal Proverbs 31 Woman
Let’s look at five factors that define a Proverbs 31 woman.
- She values her family.
- She is hardworking.
- She’s generous.
- She invests.
- She’s prayerful.
By the end of this story, you’ll be able to pick out dos and don’ts. They'll help you perform a self-check to identify your shortfalls. You'll then find it easy to make adjustments and become one of the noble people in society.
Family is Everything
God started a family during creation. He found it fit for a man to have a companion and made the woman. When Jesus appeared at the wedding in Cana, He authenticated the marriage as a heavenly accepted union.
Now, this is what the Proverbs 31 woman understands like the back of her hand.
Wisdom is a quality she carries along in all her dealings. A wise woman builds her house.
How does she do it?
Her family is her priority.
A Proverbs 31 woman sacrifices her sleep to ensure her husband and children find food when they wake up. She works late to supplement her husband’s income for the good of the family.
What value can we pick from here?
A Proverbs 31 woman does not entirely delegate duties to her servants. She instructs them.
She understands her position in the family. Such a character knows that if she slips off a bit, hell will break loose.
Her husband and children love and praise her for who she is.
The Work of Her Hands
Let me call her a busy bee. She knows an idle mind is the devil's workshop. If you go through the scripture, you’ll notice the writer mentioned her work several times.
She occupies her time making wool and linen. This is probably something she does at home.
She gets back home with food after a long journey of doing business. What does a merchant ship do? It transports cargo! This honored woman travels far and wide to sell her wares so that she can return home better than how she left!
She makes items people can use to supplement their dressing. I mean, she’s all-rounded. Her hands are always busy doing something constructive.
A Proverbs 31 woman enjoys financial freedom from her sweat. It’s the reason we are told she’s not afraid of the future!
God blesses the work of our hands when we are doing the right thing. If we engage our hands in dirty deals, the Lord wouldn’t bless us!
The Cheerful Giver
A Proverbs 31 woman goes out of her way to support the poor and needy. It’s a sacrifice. She doesn’t always have a surplus.
She’s sympathetic. She can’t enjoy comfort yet someone needs something basic! To her, charity is never about what she can offer. She feels the need to rescue the poor in their time of need.
Likewise, the needy do not always have to be poor. We all need a shoulder to lean on once in a while. When we find ourselves caught up in such scenarios, we need people to pull us out of the pit!
Sometimes we get cheated financial stability is good enough to help us handle situations. But we’re wrong. Most cases need moral support.
Take an example of grief. The loss of a loved one pricks so hard. It comes with a lot of planning and execution to accomplish the intended mission.
Helping the needy is investing in them. It doesn’t have to be financial help. Whether they will be available or not when we get needy, God will position our helpers and make sure our problem gets sorted.
A Proverbs 31 Woman Invests
The scripture tells us she looks at land and buys it. With the money she has earned, she plants a vineyard.
What a brilliant woman!
She doesn’t rely on her husband to run her life! An investment signifies that she makes profits in her businesses.
The land has only been used as an example. But let’s get deeper into it. The land is an asset. Once she’s bought it, it remains an asset that can help her generations unless she decides to sell it later. She cares about the future!
Remember, she does this as a way of planning for the coming days, or years!
She reminds me of one vice; competition. It has ruined marriages.
A husband is the head of the family. The wife is a supportive head. We wouldn’t question God but He can decide to make a wife financially stronger than her husband! Case studies reveal that a good percentage of women blow small situations out of proportion when they get financially stable. That can’t match a Proverbs 31 woman. Her family matters the most. Money will never override her husband.
Now, let’s look at the umbrella of all these qualities.
The Power of a Praying Woman
Would it be easy to hold the Proverbs 31 woman position without prayer?
A personal relationship with God keeps a virtuous woman in check. She does not rely on family prayer. A caring woman allocates private covenant time and respects her prayer schedule.
She emulates Jesus who left the disciples to have some alone time with God.
Why did Jesus go to the mountain on his own?
He wanted a more intimate connection with God! Jesus always got answers after praying alone.
Take an example of when He taught the disciples the ‘Our Father’ prayer. Jesus had been praying in a place alone. When the disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, the Holy Spirit gave Him an immediate answer!
Look at that!
By whose power was Jesus able to figure out what to tell the disciples? The Holy Spirit of course!
When we run away from the noise to get closer to God, He also deepens His fishing net to catch more fish for us!
Or let’s put it this way!
A good close friend understands us more than a distant friend.
It’s also possible that we’ve identified some anomalies in one of the family members. How then would we pray in their presence?
Take an example of a husband who begins to exhibit signs of verbal abuse. Would he be happy to hear us mention it in our prayers?
Personal prayer moves mountains.
Does the Proverbs 31 Woman Disagree with her Husband?
The word ‘wisdom’ carries a lot of weight. She might have had the most difficult moments. She’s gone through a refinery process. We call it resilience.
Through her divine wisdom, she’s been able to shape her family members into what God created them to be. By the power of the Holy Spirit, Mother Mary was able to cool Joseph down when she emerged with a pregnancy!
What can’t a woman who relies on God achieve?
